The backup finished. Record what a restore test proves

Record a controlled backup restore with our free Excel log. Track the sample, checks, result, action owner and retest date, with a clear fictional example.

A successful backup message and a usable recovered file answer different questions. This worksheet is for recording a controlled test with your IT owner: what was restored, what was checked and what needs to happen next.

Agree the test before starting

Choose the system, a sample, the backup or restore point and the checks that would make the sample useful. Agree an isolated destination with the responsible IT owner. Do not restore over live data or into production as an exercise for this worksheet. This article is a guide to the log, not a platform-specific recovery procedure.

Record evidence, not just a green result

Use Checks and evidence to say what you opened and how you compared it with the expected sample. Keep sensitive contents out of the log; a reference to controlled evidence is enough. The worked example records three files that opened and matched, followed by a different sample that restored but could not be opened by its application.

Give failures an owner and a next date

Record elapsed minutes and choose an honest result: Not tested, Passed sample checks, Failed or Blocked. Then assign the follow-up action, its owner and a retest date. A useful failed test identifies work to resolve. Marking it complete because the restore operation finished would hide that work.

Keep the conclusion within the evidence

Passing this sample does not prove complete business recovery. Agree broader exercises and test frequency separately with your provider. The workbook gives you 20 rows, two fictional examples and instructions. Store completed copies in a restricted business location and review outstanding actions before the next test.
