Why Your Business Needs MFA (And How to Set It Up in 5 Minutes)
If there's one thing I tell every client I work with here in Ireland, it's this: turn on MFA. Multi-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication. Whatever you want to call it — just turn it on.
Here's why. Passwords get stolen. It happens all the time — phishing emails, data breaches from big companies, people reusing the same password for everything from their email to their Tesco Clubcard login. When someone gets your password, MFA is the only thing standing between them and your business email, your files, your client data.
MFA means that even if someone has your password, they also need your phone to log in. That's it. Simple as.
Setting it up takes about 5 minutes. In Microsoft 365, go to your account security settings and add the Microsoft Authenticator app. In Google Workspace, it's under 2-Step Verification. Download the app, scan the QR code, done.
I've worked with businesses across Galway and the west of Ireland who've had email accounts compromised, invoices redirected to fraudulent bank accounts, and spent days cleaning up the mess. The Data Protection Commission here in Ireland is taking this stuff seriously too — a breach could mean fines under GDPR on top of the damage to your reputation.
The most common pushback I hear is "it's annoying having to use my phone every time." Fair point. But you know what's more annoying? Ringing your clients to tell them their personal data was compromised because you couldn't be bothered with a 5-second step on your phone.
If you're not sure whether MFA is enabled on your business accounts, drop me a WhatsApp. I can check and set it up for you in minutes. It's genuinely the single best thing you can do for your business security today.
